Our story starts with two companions

When I was looking for ideas for The Valleys Yarnhouse I wanted something grounded, fun and rooted in Welsh weather, landscape, and the quiet companionship of dogs who have walked, and sailed, life alongside me. Much like arts and craft work, have shaped my life...

Our branding has grown slowly and honestly, much like the craft itself, influenced by hills, sea air, and journeys shared over time.

Draig – of the Valleys

Draig is my lurcher, my shadow, and my daily walking companion. Born in the Rhondda Valley, he carries the spirit of the hills in his long stride and gentle nature. Though only born in 2025, he already has the thoughtful calm of an old soul. Until he gets over excited!

We regularly venture out together into the South Wales hills, following worn paths and quiet tracks where the land opens up and the mind settles. Draig thrives in these wide spaces, shaped by wind, rain, and changing light. He’s just as content with a trip to the beach, where the land gives way to the sea and the air tells a different story.

At home, Draig is a creature of comfort. Most days, you’ll find him asleep in his armchair or watching the world pass by through the window—patient, observant, and kind. He reflects the heart of The Valleys Yarnhouse: warmth, steadiness, looking like he's made of natural yarn fibres, and the slow, thoughtful rhythm of making something that lasts.

Draig’s presence runs deeply through our branding and design work. The colours, textures, and mood of our branding draw directly from the landscapes where he was born and still walks today—mossy greens, slate greys, soft browns, and the muted blues of distant hills. His calm nature inspires designs that feel grounding and familiar, made to be used, worn, and returned to over time.

You can see how Draig’s influence shapes our identity throughout the website, from our visual branding to the yarns and designs that carry his name and spirit. He represents loyalty, kindness, and a deep connection to place—values woven into everything we create.

Draig and I have also wrote a book together which you can find on this website and in local bookshops.

Teacup - The saltwater soul

Our nautical-inspired branding belongs to another dog, whose memory remains an enduring part of The Valleys Yarnhouse.

Teacup, my first Lurcher, came into my life after I found her as a lost puppy in a car park in Pembrokeshire. From that moment on, she became my constant companion at sea. She lived with me aboard a houseboat and sailed the South UK coast, completely at home among ropes, tides, and rolling decks.

During my time as a Sea Scout leader, Teacup joined countless adventures afloat with young people, quietly becoming part of the crew. She built friendships wherever she went, offering steady companionship and trust—often shaping memories that stayed with those young people long after the sails were lowered.

Teacup’s influence lives on in our coastal designs. Her life at sea inspires textures that echo rope, canvas, and weathered timber, alongside colours shaped by salt, sky, and tide—deep navy, seaweed green, storm grey, and salt-softened whites. These designs carry a sense of movement and adventure, shaped by journeys and shared work on the water.
